The results of Geo4all Work Package 1 (WP1) are available as of 27 October 2025. This study collected and interpreted existing knowledge about low-temperature geothermal energy (LTG) in the Netherlands, with the aim of gaining insight into the opportunities and technical challenges of geothermal energy at medium depths (500–1500 metres).

The research shows that LTG is technically feasible in the Netherlands, but that there is still a lack of knowledge. Most of the outstanding knowledge questions relate to how sufficient water can be produced without carrying too many particles. The necessary experience with the drilling technique itself has already been gained in the Netherlands, but further cost reduction for LTG applications still requires targeted research. In addition, better characterisation of the subsurface is essential to reduce development risks and optimise well completion. Some of these knowledge questions are already being investigated in ongoing projects such as SCAN Geothermal Energy and MOOI DIAMETER.

The findings and recommendations are summarised in:

  • A report interpreting the collected data, providing insight into the knowledge that is still lacking and recommendations for further research.
  • An Excel database with supporting data containing the collected (public) data on boreholes and completions.
  • A public summary (in Dutch) with the most important insights.
