Unlocking marginal geothermal reservoirs
There are geothermal reservoirs that have less heat or are more difficult to access for other reasons (referred to as suboptimal reservoirs). New drilling techniques and well completion methods could be the solution for these suboptimal reservoirs. Research into improving geothermal extraction from layers that were previously considered less suitable allows for geothermal energy to be extracted in more areas of the Netherlands and at lower costs.
The research for work package 2 (WP2) consists of several components:
- Data collection & review
Well concept scenarios, data requests. Case studies (Luttelgeest, Koekoekspolder, Amsterdam, Almere). – TNO, WellPerform, ACL, Aardwarmtecluster, HVC/Vattenfall. - Modelling of well concept and economic case
Ensemble upscaled models, performance evaluated using EVEReST field development tool. – TNO, WellPeform, Industry Partners - Research mud
Performance, circularity, cost reduction for drilling fluids and cuttings. – EBN - Reporting
Technical presentation, summary paper, workflow for the Slochteren formation, workshop and recommendations for the sector. – TNO, WellPerform, EBN
