Cool insights: sandstone reservoirs do not cool uniformly

Within Geo4all WP4, new insights have been gained into how a geothermal reservoir cools during production. The results were recently presented at the World Geothermal Congress 2026 in Calgary.

Measurements at the Middenmeer geothermal site show that cooling does not occur uniformly across the full thickness of the sandstone reservoir. Cooling was mainly observed in the lower parts of the reservoir. Differences in permeability between rock layers are likely to play an important role. This knowledge helps improve modelling of the development of the cold front around an injection well.
