A new milestone has been reached within the Geo4All innovation programme. From 15 to 24 June 2026, five new surface monitoring stations and one 200-metre-deep borehole station for (micro)seismic monitoring were successfully installed (3 in Kwintsheul and 2 in Bleiswijk). Following more than a year of preparation, network design, procurement, implementation and testing, the monitoring stations were successfully deployed by TNO and Baker Hughes.

The monitoring stations are a key component of the Measurement, Monitoring & Modelling activities within Work Package 4 of Geo4all. They continuously record (micro)seismic signals to improve our understanding of the effects of geothermal heat production in the subsurface.

The measurements contribute to research addressing questions such as:

  • How does subsurface cooling evolve over space and time?
  • How do the geothermal reservoir and existing faults respond to this cooling?

The data collected will help researchers better understand and model geothermal systems. These insights will contribute to the safe, reliable and optimal deployment of geothermal energy.

The monitoring stations have been installed at the operational geothermal sites of Geo4all partners Nature’s Heat and Gaia Energy and are operated by TNO.

On 8 July, participants in Geo4all Work Package 4 visited the three surface stations in Kwintsheul. To test the installation directly in practice, they carried out an unusual final test: they jumped simultaneously next to one of the monitoring stations. The test was successful: the jumps were clearly visible in the seismic measurements, providing a clear illustration of the sensitivity of the new monitoring system.
