Enhanced performance of shallow closed-loop geothermal systems

The goal is to promote the use of deeper closed geothermal systems (from 300 to 1500 meters) by demonstrating that these systems achieve higher efficiency and are also safe for the environment.
Knowledge about the behavior of the subsurface is gained through monitoring pilots at two different locations. Through innovative placement of fiber optic cables in and around the ground loops, information can be obtained about possible groundwater flows, thermal properties of the subsurface, potential leaks, and the entire system can be optimized for a specific location.

The research for work package 3 (WP3) consists of several components:

  • Installation & Monitoring
Logging (SP, GR & BHE) – fibre-optic cables in the ground loop and in the grout – thermal response testing and regular temperature testing – TEON, TNO
  • Analysis
Subsurface models generated to estimate thermal conductivity. Ground workflow, well interference and leakage risk – TNO
  • Reporting
Summary report on activities, findings, business case deep closed loop vs shallow, impact on legislation
    TNO, TEON, EBN
